Panasonic Lumix GF1 rumoured launch Sept 1st

Panasonic GF1

This is the big news I’ve been waiting for. Word is finally leaking out that Panasonic will be announcing its new micro 4/3rds camera in the next couple of weeks. What makes this a big deal is its physical size. Rumour has it sized at 119mm x 71mm x 36.3mm (roughly 4-5/8″ wide x 2-3/4″ tall x 1-3/8″ thick), which would make it smaller than the Olympus E-P1. It’s not much larger than a point & shoot, meaning it’ll make a great street camera – something you can lug around day to day without all the baggage that comes with a dSLR and its associated lenses and gear. This camera will have interchangeable lenses, though, so you’ll still be carrying around a small bag of some sort. As for image quality, count on it being right up there with most entry level dSLR cameras. Not sure how it’ll handle low light noise. At the moment there are no details on specs, but that should come in the press release. If the price is right, this might be my next toy.

This looks exactly right for me (and a lot of others I’ll bet). If they add an ultrawide lens (24mm equivalent or wider) I’ll sign up.

Yeah, the GF1 is one sweet looking camera. I’m really curious what the LX4 will have for improvements. Longer lens would be nice. Swivel screen too. Panasonic has its work cut out for it if it wants to beat the new Canon G11, from what I see.
